Gift Card Spending Surpassed Expectations as Last-Minute Shoppers Looked for Quick, Easy Gifts
(Jan. 12, 2007 ) Almost Half of Recipients Use Cards within a Month and Spend More Than Card’s Value Washington, DC, January 23, 2007 - Though the holiday season officially ended several weeks ago, retailers continue to see consumers hitting the stores to spend gift cards. According to an NRF survey, conducted by BIGresearch, consumers have plenty left to spend: shoppers said they had spent less than half of the value of their gift cards (37.3% on average) by the second week in January.

The fourth annual National Retail Federation (NRF) Gift Card Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found that gift card sales will total $24.81 billion this holiday season, an impressive $6 billion increase over 2005 when gift card sales hit $18.48 billion.

Shoppers Report Less Stress, Fewer Store Visits, and a New View of Gift Giving; Plan To Spend $339 on Gift Cards and $679 on Additional Gift Items

Gift cards are changing both gift-getting and giving, according to an American Express® Gift Card survey released today. Virtually all those surveyed (92%) agree that gift cards have altered how they shop.
Gift card purchasers say that they expect to visit fewer stores (62%), purchase less actual merchandise as gifts (60%), and shop more online (28%). In addition, they plan to finish shopping faster and with less stress (74%).

As Popularity Increases Consumers to Spend a Total of $18.48 Billion on Gift Cards this Holiday.

Washington, DC, November 17, 2005—With gift cards ranking third on consumers’ wish lists this year, there is no sign that the craze is slowing down, according to the findings of the latest National Retail Federation (NRF) survey. The third annual NRF Gift Card Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found that gift card sales will total $18.48 billion this holiday season, a 6.6 percent increase over 2004, when holiday gift card sales hit $17.34 billion. The average consumer will spend $88.03 on gift cards this holiday season, 15.6 percent of their holiday gift budget. [ more... ]
